5 Tips for Making Meal Prep Easier

Check Your Schedule for the Week

Before you start meal prepping or even grocery shop for the week, the first thing you’re going to want to do is check your schedule for the week so you can plan accordingly. Depending on what your schedule is like, you can plan out meals that sit well with you and fill you up, as well as snacks to have on hand when you have busy days ahead. This will also help reduce waste!

Meal Prep Around Foods You Love

Do you meal prep and end up not eating half the meals because you’re just not in the mood for them? To help avoid this, prep around your favorite foods. For example, if salmon is one of your favorite foods use it as the main ingredient in multiple dishes. One day you can have it with rice and veggies and another day you can have it on top of a salad. Doing this will help you be more excited about eating the meals you’ve prepped and will help avoid food waste.

Properly Seal & Store Food

Keeping your food properly sealed and stored is the key to ensuring it stays fresh and flavorful throughout the week. When you first get started with meal prepping, research how to store ingredients properly and how long it’s good for. For veggies that you would usually leave out on the counter (avocados, onions, etc.), try keeping them in the fridge to help preserve them longer. For leftovers, opened food (bread, bagels, etc.), and the meals you’ve prepped for the week, utilize airtight glass containers.

Use a Slow Cooker or Pan to Re-Heat Food

I love using a microwave to reheat leftovers or the food I’ve prepped for the week, but it’s one of the easiest ways to dry out and remove the flavor from whatever you’re heating up. So, instead of using a microwave, try reheating your food in a pan on the stove or in a slow cooker. Always keep the heat low and stir frequently for the best flavor and texture. If you’re re-heating quinoa or rice-based meals, add a sliver of butter into the pan to add extra moisture and to help break up clumps.

Utilize the Right Gadgets

It’s no secret that meal prepping takes time, we’ve already covered that. One of the best ways to make time go by faster is to utilize the right gadgets. This meal-prepping cutting board makes prep super easy and even has a built-in scale! I also love using this salad spinner for drying off berries and this strainer and colander set to help make washing fruits and veggies a breeze.
