6 Fashion Blogging Myths Debunked (you need to know about!)

6 Fashion Blogging Myths Debunked

Hello, Gorgeous! I’ve been thinking of ways to give insight to Blush Babes just starting out their fashion blog and wanting to learn as much as possible about the amazing niche they’ve chosen. That’s what inspired today’s blog post! Over the past 15 months there were many hypotheses I had about fashion blogging, and many of them were totally false.

In this post I’m sharing 6 fashion blogging myths that turned out to be completely not true!

YOU HAVE TO ALWAYS WEAR NEW CLOTHES FOR BLOG POSTS

When I first started blogging I thought I needed a new outfit for every single post. I would look at these well established fashion bloggers who always seemed to wear new clothes for every post!

I started to buy new clothes ALL the time, even clothes I knew I wouldn’t wear much, just to have new clothes to wear for the blog. Not only was this horrible on my budget, but this wasn’t sustainable.

I stopped buying new clothes for three months back in the fall and started restyling items already in my closet because #budget. Do you know what happened?! No one noticed, or if they did, they didn’t care because there is an understanding that buying all new clothes for every post isn’t realistic. Not only was I being more financially responsible, but I also got creative with new looks. Some of my favorite outfits are with items I have restyled and used in posts multiple times!

Blush & Camo readers responded just as well to outfits I restyled verses when I bought an all new look for a post.

If you are just starting out and think you need all new clothes, you totally don’t. I highly recommend investing in some classic pieces to start and recreating outfits from these items!

YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

For the longest time I thought I ALWAYS had to be on social media. I was terrified of missing a post and not leaving a comment afraid people would think I was being unsupportive.

This is totally false. As a fashion blogger, having a social media presence is important to growing your blog and brand, but it’s not a requirement to always be on Instagram commenting on every photo. In fact, I would urge you to take a day or two with minimal contact on social media to enjoy the people and experiences around you- then hit up social media hard the next day:).

When I starting to ease off of Instagram on Saturdays I was afraid people would think I didn’t care about their feeds, or the community of blogger friends I created would think I wasn’t being supportive of their most recent posts. This is entirely not true and none of these things happened.

In fact, since I was able to take minor break from social media I felt more refreshed the next day to leave more meaningful comments and really interact with the social media pages I love!

Women understand that it’s impossible to be on social media 24/7 and if you miss commenting on a post of a feed you love you can always go back and comment later. I promise! The important part is that you are trying to support other women and leave comments as often as you can! Your best is enough:)

YOU NEED DESIGNER CLOTHES TO GET NOTICED

As a fashion blogger I thought I needed designer clothes in order to be taken seriously. Wearing designer items are awesome, but they are not necessary. In fact, my most popular posts are items that are budget friendly and at a price point more people can relate too!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with owning designer items, but if you are worried that you are behind the curve because you don’t own any- you’re not:). Readers love to see how you style items in a creative way and how you put cute pieces together- not how much something costs and if it’s a certain label.

Millennials are moving away from brands and are more focused on the fit and style of a particular item. Regardless if your item is Forever21 or Chanel- the way you style the piece makes your look- not the price tag! (This romper in today’s post is from Old Navy!)

YOU NEED TO BE ON ALL SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

When I first started blogging I thought I needed to be on every single social media platform out there. This is simply not true.

If you are good at one social media platform start there and then once you get comfortable with that platform add another. Starting with too many platforms that you aren’t great at managing yet will get extremely overwhelming and frustrating.

There is nothing wrong starting out on one platform and then adding another. Not only will your attention be focused on just one platform, but you will quickly pick up on the strategies you need to grow your fashion blog brand on that particular platform. Then, you can move to another platform and do the same thing!

I started out on all social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest). I wish I would have started with just one and worked my way from there. Now, I am slowly going through each platform and learning the best way to approach each individually. Different strategies are required for certain platforms!

YOU WILL MAKE MONEY QUICKLY

I honestly thought I would make money fashion blogging soon after I launched my blog. I did not start my blog to make money, I started Blush &  Camo as a creative outlet and as a way to share all my style tips- however, making money to cover some of the expenses of blogging is always a good thing!

I have NO idea what I was thinking! Fashion blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. To make money blogging you have to let your brand grow for awhile (this takes time!) and learn the craft you are entering into.

There is so much to learn about fashion blogging from SEO, to how to collaborate with companies, to how to promote your blog posts! It seems easy to make money from blogging, but I promise it’s harder than you think (but NOT impossible!).

When you are first starting out, don’t get discouraged if you aren’t getting all the collaborations you want. Trust in the brand you are building and confident in the content you are releasing! The collaborations will come:).

PEOPLE WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOOK AT MY BLOG

When I first started blogging I thought that my site would get a ton of traffic. Again, I don’t know what I was thinking. Just because you have a blog doesn’t mean people will flock to it.

There was a period of time when only my mom and spam were commenting on my posts. Then, there were days when not even spam wouldn’t comment on my posts and I thought “was my post so bad that spam didn’t even bother to leave a comment?!” and I would get discouraged.

When you are starting a fashion blog Google is tricky about ranking your site (this topic I’ll cover in detail in another blog post!) and search engine optimization (SEO) plays a huge role in how many people will see your site as well as how you promote your blog posts on social media.

Starting out people did not flock to my site, but eventually I was able to grow a solid Blush Babe readership! Don’t get discouraged if you just started a blog and you feel like no one is reading it. It takes a little time for people to know your brand and fashion blog (and that’s TOTALLY ok!). Once they do, you’ll start to see your stats increase:)!

Overall, fashion blogging is a process and getting your brand out there takes time and patience. These are my top 6 hypothesis debunked and I would love to know what you first thought about fashion blogging before you started your blog?! Can you relate to any of these points I talked about in today’s post?!

Thank you SO much for stopping by Blush & Camo!

  3. Love this post Julianna! I feel like so many people have such false ideas about blogging! I know a lot of my friends think my blog probably takes me a half an hour a day and I do really nothing else when it comes to it. I’m currently trying to use WordPress Plugins and I swear I am STRUGGLING! I am so bad with technology I swear I was born in the wrong decade.

  5. Always good to know that other style bloggers have gotten to the same conclusion as yourself. Blogging can seriously be so confusing form time to time, is nice to get some confirmation that you are doing things right.

Love your blog by the way!
