Hello, Gorgeous! Today on Blush & Camo I’m giving my best tips on a topic I know you ladies are interested in- how to get your significant other (S.O.) to take your Insta photos! Having your S.O take your photos is a huge help for so many reasons to include money saving and the convince of them always being around them.
When I started blogging Chuck had no idea what I was doing (and to be honest, I didn’t fully know what I was doing either!) so when I asked him to take some photos on Instagram the experience was a little rocky. While I do work with a photographer on a regular basis (go check out Jessica’s work- you won’t regret it!), Chuck also takes my photos when we travel together or to simply showcase my #ootd on social media.
Over the course of two years Chuck and I have figured out how to work together to create beautiful images to post on my social media. This didn’t happen overnight, but the tips I’m about to share help tremendously in bridging the gap between blogger and husband photographer!
Are you ready to find out what those tips are?! Then keep reading, Gorgeous!
TOP 4 TIPS TO GET YOUR S.O TO TAKE YOUR PHOTOS
BE CONSIDERATE OF EACH OTHER’S TIME
When I first started blogging I had to remind myself that this was my dream, not Chuck’s. What I mean by this just because I was ready to have my #ootd picture taken and posted to social media did not mean Chuck had to drop what he was doing to take my picture.
I needed to be considerate of his time as well!
To solve this issue I would ask what time on the weekend’s would work best for Chuck’s schedule to take my photo. This way I’m valuing Chuck’s time and recognizing this is a team effort- not one sided.
BE PATIENT WITH ONE ANOTHER
When Chuck first started taking photos for me he was trying to figure out the camera and I was trying to figure out what angles looked best in a photo. The process of working together from novices was difficult at first, but now Chuck understands what I am looking for in a photo and I also understand angles I look better at than others.
The key to growing together was simply patience. Chuck had patience with me as I scrolled through the photos saying no I don’t like this one or that one- and vice versa. I was patient with Chuck as he learned how to use a DSLR camera.
TAKE TIME TO LEARN ONE ANOTHER’S PASSIONS
When Chuck and I first started using a DSLR camera they look SUPER intimidating. Especially when you are trying to shoot in manual. Chuck was sweet enough to take the time to watch YouTube videos, go onto blogs, and simply play around with the camera (he even took the videos on my e-course!).
Since Chuck was sweet enough to learn this for me (he totally didn’t have to!) I started to take in interest in where Chuck’s interests were- sports! I would (and still do!) sit on the couch and watch football and basketball games and even watch sports documentaries. This meant a lot to Chuck that I was willing to also learn and take time to invest in his interests.
Showing your S.O that you are interested in their passions will give you a higher chance of your S.O. taking interest in yours!
DON’T BE AFRAID TO TELL THEM WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IN A PHOTO
When we first started taking photos together I was afraid to tell Chuck what was “wrong” with the photo or what I didn’t like about it. Chuck could tell I wasn’t happy when scrolling through the pics we just took and he finally said, “Julianna, you’re not going to hurt my feelings if you tell me you don’t like it. Just be honest with me about what you don’t like and I’ll try and fix it.”
When Chuck said that I realized that it’s ok to tell your S.O what you want out of your photo such as, “I want a close up pic only showcasing my details” or “Can you squat and point the camera upwards to make me appear taller?”. What I thought was bossy Chuck considered very helpful.
I also realized that if I don’t like the photo here’s the best way to tell your S.O; With Chuck I will point to a photo that I do like and then compare that photo to the one I don’t. This way your S.O can learn how the angle of the picture or where the camera lens is focused can make or break a photo! You’re complimenting their ability to take photos, but also turning it into a learning opportunity instead of just “attacking” the photos they just tried to take for you.
These are my four tips for how to get your significant other (S.O.) to take your Insta photos! I know Chuck doesn’t have to take my photos and I am forever thankful that I have such a caring husband who is willing to take time out of his day to do this for me.
